Tunisia

Nestled between the Sahara and the Mediterranean, Tunisia is a melting pot of cultures, where ancient history, vibrant cities, and stunning natural landscapes meet. These photos capture scenes from a one-week road trip across this diverse country.

Cities

Tunis is a hectic city with a lot to experience. As a tourist, you may feel out of place amid the tight streets and bustling souks that wind around the city. However, Tunisians are warm and welcoming, and the city holds pockets of beauty in unexpected corners. From the intricate old doors and decorative paintings to landmarks like the Bardo Museum, Tunis offers a glimpse into the layers of history left by the various empires that once ruled here. Tunisian architecture, with its unique blend of styles, reflects the country's rich cultural influences.

The Sahara

Leaving behind the bustle of Tunis, the urban landscape gradually fades, replaced by Tunisia’s desert wilderness in all its stark beauty. At first, the land is still fertile, supporting groves of olive and date trees, a testament to human resilience on the desert's edge. But as the road stretches south, the scenery changes: rocky plains give way to rolling hills dusted with hardy shrubs, and then to the endless golden sand dunes.

Here, one can truly appreciate the camel, an animal adapted perfectly to the desert. With multiple knees that fold gracefully beneath it, protective eyes and ears impervious to sand, and an ability to trek for weeks without water, the camel embodies resilience and survival in this harsh environment.
